As someone who doesn't know much about architecture, I was in a way surprised that this approach is called 'alternative' practice. My first thought was, 'why isn't all architecture like this?'. I guess the answer is probably something to do with money. But the alternative approach seems to parallel a lot of developments in other fields (e.g. healthcare) to do with user involvement and representation, so maybe our society is moving that way in general...??? What really impressed me was the creativity of this approach. I don't know if that's just because architects are creative people! I suppose that creativity is part of your job.

Keep up the good work! I'm glad that 5/6/7 years of intensive studying and working haven't dampened your spirits!

Democracy in a more social and sociable architecture means that some people may seem rude when in fact they are simply expressing an excluded position. How can changing hats really change the agenda so that the unpleasant appearance of social problems drugs, mental health, homelessness, are not something the brightest, the cleverest and the most mobile shrink away from? How can we make sense of the ground beyond the client?

I think Alternative Practice must be something to do with the unmapped value of people, a professionalism that is deft and intuitive, disinterested yet connected to the possibilities of people and places.

Alternative Practice really means what it says and really believes that people have similar gifts, possibilities and creativities. Good luck with your thinking!

PS I never knew that there was such a subject as architectural psychology.............

I think it is important to use the (potential)scale of this project to consider how the thinking could be imported to other smaller and more urgent quality of life probems in Sheffield (and other cities). Roads what they look like, how they're used and CARS too many, too too many. Cars, in my opinion are the greatest problem affecting our ability to live a good quality of life. Is there any way that while you're considering the 'road trip' that you may think of ways that employers and workers might work together to retimetable the so-called (and totally unneccessary) 'rush hour' week that we all seem to have and to run away from to country parks.

This project sounds so interesting. It can be archived by the school and become a powerful tool for the future development of the school through this process which will enthuse and involve parents and others who may have wider links to the process of getting things done. If the excitement of the project could be put over through a 'school development' newsletter where the project is simply and clearly expressed but then the problems and issues thrown over to the parents and others to put their ten penny worth in then you would really get community ownership....... Good luck!

An update on the sessions held at Hunters Bar Infant School to date:

Workshop One - Wednesday 11th October 2006 (Foundation Year)

Brief Description

Session One

Introduced ourselves to the children and did a small play featuring King Bertie. Through the story we introduced the idea of the lost treasure and detectives who were going to find it. We emphasised that we needed the children to help us. The children went to find the treasure in a different classroom (this was initially to be outside but was rained off). We split into three groups depending on the colour of their treasure and discussed where they had found the treasure and asked them to describe it. The yellow group drew a big picture of where they had found it. The red group re-hid their treasure and we had to find it. The blue group started to make shapes on the classroom floor using the treasure.

Playtime

We went out and interacted with the children during playtime.

Session Two

After playtime we stayed in the same groups and introduced the idea of the playground. The groups did different activities. Inside we looked at inspirational pictures relating to the idea of playground and playtime. These ranged from play equipment images to pictures of clouds. Outside in the bikeyard we started to use the stones to make shapes and objects outside that could be used for play.

Assembly - Friday 13th October 2006 (Year One)

Brief Description

We conducted a play which introduced the idea of animals having different homes and play environments, what they were made out of, if they liked their home etc. The children were actively engaged throughout the assembly by answering questions posed to them by us.

This led on to asking them about their homes, who made them, what they were made out of and who designed them. This introduced the idea of the architect.

Explained to them that as architecture students we would be in their school to help design the playground. We asked for their help by requesting their ideas in picture, word or other format that they could post in a box in the main reception the following week.

Workshop Two - Friday 13th October 2006 (Foundation Year)

Brief Description

Session One (Class 3)

Sat them down on a rug in the bike yard with their decorated treasure where King Bertie introduced the task of creating a safe place for the treasure. We split into 3 groups depending on treasure colour. Each group were allowed to select pieces of equipment provided by ourselves which included pipe insulating tubes, rope, fabric, chalk and tape. The aim was to try and let the children lead the task.

Session Two (Class 2)

The task was again introduced by King Bertie on the rug in the bike yard. As a result of the first session we decided to make a safe place for the treasure as a whole group led by ourselves. This left little room for their input. We built a large enclosure for all of the treasure and so all of the children could participate in the same activity.

In this case, would alternative practice just be as simple as a mid-stage process between normal users and professionals? Loads of thoughts, researches and experiements.

I think this is an extremely important angle on the discussion, because the built environment can only provide the settings for human interactions, rather than the interactions between architecture and people being the priority (which Prof. Bryan Lawson argues is a predominant concern for the majority of 'typical' architects - Bryan Lawson, 'The Language of Space').

In this thread, therefore, alternative practice can be seen as a process of acknowledging this condition and readdressing the priorities of the concern of the public over those of the 'typical' architect and their value systems.

I think that last sentence is crucial. Perhaps it's a 'heart and mind' thing (in the words of Alan Simpson, former member of 'Yorkshire Forward') that deals with, as you say 'invisible' concerns and desires.

Although this is not to dismiss the place/importance of the built architecture (environment), but to provide a soul/spirit into the output of an architectural practice.

Therefore alternative practice is holistic

... is alternative political...? is it the desire for change, redressing imbalances in society?...is it unashamedly saying that we have political concerns which outweigh commercial ones and are a necessary part of out actions...? i know some prefer the word 'ethical' but perhaps that a lot of alternative practice isn't just about that single act/issue and your role within in it but about a belief in a fundemental change within a system it could be closer to political (for expample the desire for education)... a change which you cannot predict the final outcome....
i know this sounds a bit overblown and I don't mean to be too serious or pompous and also my definitions of what is ethical/ politcal leave a lot to be desired, however going back to another post I left I think maybe it is about what alternative tries to do rather than the forms which it manisfests itself...
